Famous Belgians

Today is the birthday of two famous Belgians:

Jan Frans De Boever, born in Ghent in 1872, is a world famous painter, known for his morbid-erotic styles. Not to the taste of everyone of course (seems he thought women were evil) but that is how art is.

Also, Kim Clijsters, the tennis star, born in Bilzen in 1983, she is probably more famous around the world today. In 2011 Time Magazine ranked her as the 16th most influential person in the world, the first person from the world of sports named on the list.

  1. Actually, I've always been rather fond of De Boever's stuff (didn't know he was a Belgian). His worked seemed to me to convey the brutal truth of the dangers of seductive immorality. But, as you aluded to, art is in the eye of the beholder.

  2. I don't know much about art, just that we have produced some of the most famous in the world, just not everyone realizes it. De Boever I think definitely had some "issues" with women!

  3. How does a tennis player become the world's 16th most influential person? I'd never heard of her.
